Hello WordPress fam. I had planned to do something fun to celebrate gaining 100 followers. The recent events in our country have left many confused and hurting. I’m one of them.

I would like to thank all of you for the likes, comments, follows, and support you’ve given me these last 2 years.

The following is a one of a series of works I wrote about injustice. Sometimes understanding comes from walking in the shoes of someone else for a moment.

The sun peeks through the window shades

My husband rolls over, and holds me in a tight embrace

He breathes in my scent of cocoa and shea butter

I leap out of bed

Pulled my dreadlocks into a tight bun on my head

In the bathroom mirror, I study my face

The deep, dark, rich hue

The barely there lines circling my mouth and around my eyes

Signs of wisdom, Grandma always said

I put on my favorite black baseball cap and bulky sweats

I go for a run

The music dancing in my ears

A soundtrack to my every step

The cool Autumn air fills my lungs

My pace is slow at first, but a burst of adrenaline takes over

Faster and faster I go

Suddenly blinded by red, white, and blue lights

Two large men jump out weapons drawn

I raise my hands in surrender

No time for thinking

Terror jolts through my soul

My bladder gives out

Embarrassed as I look down at myself

My hands forced behind my back

Man in blue slams me face down on the hood

Cold revolver stings my temple

Force knocks my hat to the ground

My dreadlocks cascade down my back

Femininity revealed

Gender exposed

Mistaken for a man with a face like mine

Deep, dark hue

Maybe a brotha of mine who knows

Man in blue loosens grip

No apologies

They get in their car and drive away

I race home, and lock the deadbolt

I take my favorite black baseball cap off

Throw into the trash

And vowed never to wear it again
